What Surfer SEO actually does
Surfer SEO pricing is quoted on annual billing: Standard at 99 USD a month and Pro at 182 USD a month, with the monthly rate higher than both.
Surfer is a content optimisation tool. You give it a target keyword; it pulls the pages currently ranking, extracts what they have in common (typical word count, heading structure, the terms that recur across most of them) and then scores your draft live as you write against that pattern.
The Content Editor is the product; everything else in the platform orbits it.
The genuine value is time. Working out what a competitive page for a keyword looks like, by hand, means opening ten tabs and reading carefully. Surfer collapses that into a panel beside your draft, and it integrates with Google Docs, WordPress and ChatGPT so the analysis sits where you already write.
What the score is actually measuring
This is where most reviews go soft, so plainly: the content score measures how closely your draft resembles pages that already rank. That is a correlation. It contains no judgment about whether your article is accurate, original, well-argued, or worth a link.
Which means the score is a useful floor and a terrible ceiling. Hitting 70 tells you that you have probably not missed something obvious. Grinding from 82 to 94 by stuffing in the remaining suggested terms is where writers waste hours and quietly damage the article.
The correlation trap, in one paragraph
If the ten pages ranking for a term all mention a particular phrase, Surfer will tell you to mention it too. It cannot tell you whether they rank because of that phrase, or whether they simply all copied each other.
Google's own guidance puts genuinely useful content ahead of every other factor. Use the score to catch omissions; never let it dictate the shape of a sentence.
