What SEO software actually does for a small business
SEO software is any tool that helps your business get found in search. It covers five jobs: keyword research (what people type), rank tracking (where you show up), site audits (what is technically broken), backlink analysis (who links to whom), and on-page checks (titles, sitemaps, structured data).
One thing no vendor page says plainly: software is feedback, not rankings. A tool can flag a slow page or surface a keyword, but Google rewards useful pages, not green lights in a dashboard. That is straight from Google's own SEO starter guide, which names exactly one tool as essential, and it is free. If SEO itself is still fuzzy, start with our plain-English explainer on what SEO is and how it works, then come back to pick software.
