SE Ranking review: the value pick, with caveats

This SE Ranking review covers an all-in-one SEO platform aimed at freelancers and small agencies, starting at $129 a month: roughly half what the big two charge for the same daily jobs.

What follows is the August 2026 Core and Growth plans, what the 2026 rebrand changed, the add-ons that inflate the bill, and where the cheaper price actually costs you something.

What SE Ranking actually does

SE Ranking pricing starts around $129 a month for Core, and the headline is a floor: the number moves with tracked-keyword volume and the add-ons are billed on top.

SE Ranking is a full SEO platform that covers the same four jobs as the expensive all-in-ones: tracking where you rank, crawling your site for faults, researching keywords, and reporting on competitors. Its differentiator is not a single flagship dataset. It is the price at which the bundle arrives, and the amount of client-facing polish built into it.

Rank tracking is the module it is genuinely known for. Daily position checks across search engines, devices and locations, with the volume allowance to track a client roster rather than one site. The Core plan alone covers ten projects and 2,000 daily keyword position checks, which is more headroom than most freelancers will use in a year.

What you get on Core, in plain terms

  • Ten projects. Enough for a freelancer with a full client list.
  • 2,000 daily keyword checks. Rank tracking is not the thing you will run out of.
  • White-label reports. The reason agencies pick it over cheaper keyword-only tools.
  • AI search tracking. Included on Core, which the big two mostly sell as an add-on.
  • Large audit allowance. Site crawls at a scale small sites will never exhaust.

The 2026 rebrand, and why it matters when you research

SE Ranking replaced Essential, Pro and Business with Core, Growth and Enterprise in early 2026, and repriced at the same time. A large share of the SE Ranking reviews currently ranking on Google still describe the old structure and the old entry price.

If a comparison table you are reading names an Essential plan, it is out of date. And probably out of date on price too. This is the single most common error in this niche and the reason we date-stamp every figure on this site.

Plans and prices

Core, Growth and Enterprise in August 2026

Annual billing takes 20% off. The jump from Core to Growth is mostly about historical data and API access, not day-to-day features.

Growth$279$223.20Historical data, API access, guest collaboration links, dedicated support

Add-ons are extra: the Agency Pack (white-label reports and branded client portals) runs around $69 a month, and depending on what you enable, add-ons can lift a bill by 60% or more.

Core or Growth: the decision rule

The jump from Core to Growth more than doubles the bill, and the day-to-day features barely move. What you are buying is historical data, API access and guest collaboration links: three things that matter enormously to some users and not at all to most.

The rule: stay on Core unless you can name the specific report you need historical data for, or you are pulling data into something else programmatically. "It might be useful later" is how people end up paying $279 a month for a feature set they use like a $129 one.

Pick a tier in 30 seconds
  • Do you need data older than your subscription?Yes → Growth. No → Core. Historical data is the main thing behind the paywall.
  • Are you pulling data into another system?Yes → Growth, for the API. No → Core covers reporting fine.
  • Do clients need their own login?Yes → Growth adds guest collaboration links. Otherwise export PDFs from Core.
  • Everything else?Core. Ten projects and 2,000 daily checks outlast most freelance rosters.

Who should buy it

SE Ranking is the strongest fit for people who have to show their work to someone else. Freelancers reporting to clients, small agencies managing a handful of sites, and in-house marketers who need a monthly deck all get more value per dollar here than from the big two, because reporting is a first-class feature rather than an afterthought.

It is also a reasonable single-subscription answer for a small business doing its own SEO. You get research, tracking and audits in one place, at a price that does not require the site to already be earning to justify it.

That is the gap in the market it occupies, and it occupies it well: reviewers consistently describe it in price-to-quality terms rather than as the most powerful option.

Where the lower price actually costs you

Two places. First, backlinks: the index is serviceable for spot checks but not in the same class as Ahrefs. If competitor link analysis is your core job, buying SE Ranking to save money will just mean buying Ahrefs later as well.

Second, the add-on structure. Several of the features that make SE Ranking attractive for agency work sit behind the Agency Pack, and AI search tracking allowances are metered.

The advertised $129 is a genuine price for a genuine product, but it is a floor rather than a total. Write down the modules you need, then price the basket.

Buy it when this is true

  • Someone other than you reads your rankings report.
  • You manage more than one site.
  • You want one subscription, not three specialists.
  • You would rather have 80% of the depth at half the price.

Look elsewhere when this is true

  • Backlink analysis is the job → Ahrefs.
  • You need PPC data and a huge keyword database → Semrush.
  • You only want keyword research → Mangools, from about $29.
  • You have no budget yet → what you can do without paying covers a new site for months.

SE Ranking's case is client reporting at a price that does not assume you are an agency of thirty.

SideIncomeHQ editorial
Why this matters

If nobody is waiting on a monthly report from you, the feature you are paying for is the one you will never open.

Head to head

SE Ranking against the two it is trying to undercut

Same four jobs, different depth and very different bills. Pick on the job you do most often, not on the feature list length.

$129 / month

SE Ranking

Best rank tracking and client reporting per dollar. Weakest of the three on backlink depth. The default choice for freelancers and small agencies.

$249 / month

Ahrefs Standard

The backlink index is the product. Worth double the price only if link and competitor research is genuinely your weekly work. See the Ahrefs review.

$299 / month

Semrush Pro+

Widest toolkit, biggest keyword database, PPC data included. And the most add-ons. See the Semrush review before comparing totals.

How to test it in 14 days (seranking.com, read 2026-09-05)

  1. Set up every site you actually manage, not just one. The project allowance is a selling point; test it.
  2. Build one white-label report and send it to a real client or colleague. Their reaction is the product review that matters.
  3. Run the audit on your messiest site and fix three flagged issues.
  4. Check the backlink module against a competitor you know well. If it feels thin, that is the trade-off arriving early.
  5. Price the basket: plan plus every add-on you switched on: before the trial ends.

If the reporting saved you an hour a month per client, it has paid for itself. If you only ever opened the keyword tool, a budget suite does that for a third of the money.

The part no platform fixes

Google's starter guide is direct about it: useful content influences results more than any other single change you can make. Tracking a ranking daily does not move it. Use the tool to decide what to publish and what to fix, then go and do those things.

Where this fits in the wider stack

SE Ranking is our mid-tier pick in the full tool ladder and features heavily in SEO software for small business. If you have not yet run the free tools for a month, start with what you can do without paying instead. It costs nothing and makes the paid decision obvious.

How we researched SE Ranking

No multi-month hands-on trial of SE Ranking sits behind this page, and nothing here implies one does. The figures come from the vendor's own published documentation and plan pages, checked in August 2026, read alongside the pattern of complaints and praise in public user reviews.

Our full sourcing standard, including the four claims we deliberately never make, is set out in our what sits behind these calls.

FAQ

SE Ranking Review: your questions, answered straight

Why does the headline price move?

Plan price scales with tracked-keyword volume, so the published figure is a floor rather than a quote. Add-ons such as extra rank-tracking frequency and agency reporting seats are billed on top, which is where an agency budget usually drifts.

What is the documented trade-off against Ahrefs?

Backlink depth. Ahrefs runs the larger index, and SE Ranking documents that difference rather than hiding it. If link research is the job you are buying for, that is the line item to test during a trial.

How much does SE Ranking cost in 2026?

Checked in August 2026, the Core plan is $129 per month or $103.20 a month billed annually, and the Growth plan is $279 per month or $223.20 annually. Enterprise is custom-quoted. SE Ranking restructured its tiers in early 2026. The old Essential, Pro and Business names are gone, so any review still quoting those is describing a plan you can no longer buy.

What happened to the Essential, Pro and Business plans?

They were replaced in early 2026 by Core, Growth and Enterprise. This matters when you are comparing reviews: a lot of published SE Ranking content still describes the old naming and the old, lower entry price. Check the current plan page rather than trusting a comparison table written against the previous structure.

Is SE Ranking cheaper than Ahrefs and Semrush?

Yes, meaningfully. Core at $129 a month sits below the equivalent Ahrefs Standard ($249) and Semrush Pro+ ($299) tiers while covering the same four core jobs: rank tracking, audits, keyword research and competitor data. What you give up is depth, particularly on backlinks, where Ahrefs remains the benchmark. For a lot of small businesses that trade is the right one.

What are the add-ons and do I need them?

The two that catch people out are AI search tracking and the Agency Pack, which adds white-label reports and branded client portals at around $69 a month. Depending on what you enable, add-ons can raise the bill by 60% or more over the plan price. Decide which you genuinely need before you subscribe, and price the total.

Is SE Ranking good for agencies?

It is one of the strongest picks in its price bracket for client work, which is why it keeps appearing in freelancer and small-agency shortlists. White-label reporting, branded portals and generous project limits are the reasons. The honest caveat is that the client-facing polish largely lives behind the Agency Pack add-on rather than in the base plan.

Does SE Ranking have a free plan?

No. There is a 14-day trial rather than a permanently free tier. If free is your constraint, the sensible stack is Search Console and Analytics 4 for your own data, Google Trends and Keyword Planner for research, and Screaming Frog's free 500-URL crawl for audits: then trial SE Ranking when reporting to someone else becomes the job.

How accurate is SE Ranking's data?

Its rank tracking is its strongest suit and is checked daily. Search volumes and difficulty scores, like every third-party tool's, are modelled estimates and will not match Ahrefs or Semrush on the same keyword. Use them comparatively within the tool. For your own site's real positions and clicks, Search Console is still the only first-party source.

SE Ranking or Semrush for a small business?

SE Ranking, in most cases. It covers the same daily jobs at roughly half the price, and small businesses rarely use the breadth that justifies Semrush's bill. Choose Semrush instead if you need PPC data, a very large keyword database, or the content toolkit. And Ahrefs if the actual job is competitor link analysis.

Is the mid tier the right tier for you?

Compare SE Ranking against the free Google stack, the budget keyword suites and the two big all-in-ones, sorted by the job each one is built to do.
